Weekends on Vancouver Island

In mid July and also the last weekend in August we were lucky enough to join Shelley, Sean and Jade at their cottage on Vancouver Island. It was a 4 hour trip over, 2 hours on the ferry, and an hour each side in driving or waiting. ‘The Island’ is really beautiful, lots of forests, not a lot of people. Not quite as warm as an Aussie beach but very pleasant just the same. At Royston Beach we kayaked with seals swimming around us, and lazing on drift logs. At low tide we could step on gooey ducks, then a spray of water would come up and spray in random directions. The starfish were brightly coloured and huge, and the halibut fish and chips were superb. The Fanny Bay Oysters were amazing with our new Okanagan Valley Prospect wine.

On the second weekend we went it started to rain, was a bit cooler, but still a lot of fun was had as we went to Seal Bay and the Comox Fair. Quite a change from Whistler for the Quinn-MacDonalds!
